I’ve been in crypto for a while now, and every day I’m reminded of how quickly things evolve. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, a new type of scam pops up. Take the latest one, for example: scammers using AI chatbots to lure victims into depositing their hard-earned ETH into a black hole. It’s wild out there.
The New Wave of Scams
So here’s the deal. There’s this thing called an MEV bot - Miner Extractable Value bot - that supposedly helps you make money by exploiting certain conditions in crypto transactions. Now, scammers are packaging these bots as “ChatGPT Arbitrage MEV Bots” and targeting unsuspecting users who might not know better.
They’re even using YouTube videos to show how “easy” it is to set one up, with code that allegedly comes from ChatGPT itself. Spoiler alert: it doesn’t. And if you’re clicking on links from some random dude on YouTube? Yeah, that’s probably not a good idea.
The Execution
Here’s how it usually goes down: you click on a link, get taken to a fake Remix site where they want you to create your own bot, and then they ask for an ETH deposit to “activate” it. As soon as you do that? Your money is gone faster than you can say “rug pull.”
Cybersecurity firm SlowMist did some digging and found out that these scam wallets are already up to 30 ETH in just a few days. And guess what? They’re moving those funds around quicker than a hot potato.
How To Protect Yourself
Now, I’m not saying all AI is bad or that we shouldn’t use it in crypto banking platforms (there are actually some cool uses). But damn, we need to be smarter about things.
Here are some tips I’m going to start following myself:
-
Avoid Unknown Links: If you don’t know the source, don’t click.
-
Verify Everything: Especially code claiming to come from ChatGPT or any other service.
-
Be Skeptical of Easy Money: If it sounds too good to be true… well, you know the rest.
Stay Informed
The landscape is changing fast and so are the tactics used by these criminals. Being aware of what’s out there is half the battle.
I’ll admit I’m a bit behind on my scam education; this one caught me off guard. But now that I know about it? You bet I’ll be spreading the word.
Final Thoughts
In summary, while AI has its benefits (like maybe writing this article?), it also comes with new challenges and risks. Scammers are getting more sophisticated by the day; we need to be equally vigilant if we want our digital assets to remain safe.
So let’s keep our heads on straight out there folks!
